A look at AskMen.com's 10 Moves the Yankees should have made
Of course its easy to see any mistakes the Yankees made last winter now, but AskMen.com put together a graphic oriented article about the moves the Yankees should have made. I'm really not sure if this article was supposed to be a joke or not.
10. Trade for Johan Santana
Comment: Yes, he would have helped the Yankees, but at what cost? Probably Austin Jackson, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Kei Igawa. Personally, I rather hold onto Jackson and Hughes.
9. Leave Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen.
Comments: Really? People are still thinking that Joba is more of a help to the Yankees as a reliever. I guess his 2.74 ERA and 3.12 K/BB ratio as a starter does not mean anything.
8. Sign Barry Bonds.
Comments: Why? They had Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui to serve as the occasional DH. Why disgrace the House that Ruth Built in its final year with Barry Bonds?
7. Sign Manny Ramiez or Jason Bay.
Comments: I'm thinking that the author of this piece is a Red Sox fan. Yeah, Manny would've helped the offense, but why would the Sox make a deal with the Yankees? The Red Sox would not trade one of their best hitters to the Yankees in the heat of a division race. Ever. Not in a three-team deal. Jason Bay would have been a good addition, but the Yankees did ok in the outfield with Nady, Abreu, Damon and Gardner.
6. Let Hughes and Kennedy develop some more.
Comments: How? Hughes missed a huge portion of the year with a rib cage injury, and was readjusting to pitching while helping lead the S/WB Yankees to the IL title. Kennedy got a few chances this year, but the Yankees needed to win games. He just was not ready.
5. Trade for CC Sabathia/Rich Harden.
Comments: Both would have really helped the Yankees, and I think they could have gotten Harden for the package that brought in Nady and Marte. I like having both of those players for 2009.
4. Signed Randy Wolf/Paul Byrd.
Comments: Both pitchers would have helped, but I think Wolf wanted to stay on the West Coast. The Yankees could have traded for Byrd if they wanted, but did he really help Boston that much?
3. Keep Joe Torre.
Comments: Yes, Joe Torre is in the playoffs. That does not mean that he'd lead the Yankees to post season glory this year. He was in a weak division. Girardi is the right choice for the future.
2. Let Arod opt out.
Comments: And replace him with who? Wilson Betemit? The only option on the trade market was Miguel Cabrera, and he moved to first base. Joe Crede could have helped a little, but the Yankees best option was Arod. Just because he does not hit in the clutch is no reason to let him walk.
1. Stay Healthy.
Comments: This is not even a roster move. Stay healthy? I'm sure Posada and Wang wanted to get injured.
