Bobby Abreu has made a list of demands
For the first time in his 12 year career, Bobby Abreu will hit the free agent market. Although the 34 year-old outfielder has publicly stated that he's enjoyed his stint with the Yankees, and he'd like to remain with the team. But that does not mean that he'll ask for a reasonable contract:
But the 34-year-old also is seeking at least a three year-contract, leading most baseball insiders to believe the outfielder will wind up in a new uniform this winter. According to a source, Abreu has been upset by some recent media reports and speculation suggesting that his days in the Bronx are over. Abreu is vacationing with his family in the Bahama and is expected to return to the area this weekend, although his situation won't be settled until next month at the earliest, as he figures to test the free agent market. (source)Brian Cashman told reported that he has yet to discuss anything with Abreu or his representitives, so he was unable to comment on Abreu's demands. Feinsand referenced a scout in the article that felt Abreu only had "two or three years left in him." Personally, the Yankees could afford to let Abreu walk, take the draft pick and use the money to entice Mark Teixeira. The Yankees will be fine with Damon and Nady on the corners, but they should definitely explore signing a solid fourth outfielder type player like Jason Michaels, or even use Melky Cabrera in that role.
As for Abreu, I think the Mets would be a good fit, especially if he loves New York as much as he says he does. I would not rule out the Cubs, Indians, Royals or Rangers as possible destinations.
