John Heyman on Yankees Free Agent Targets
Interesting note in John Heyman's latest article on SI.com:
The Yankees are said to want to sign two out of three starting pitchers they're coveting--CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe. Sabathia is, of course, their No. 1 target. But Yankees players seem to love the idea of signing Burnett, a pitcher who has dominated them.As of now, the Yankees 2009 rotation consists of Wang, Chamberlain and Hughes, which could suggest that the Yankees may not bring back Mussina or Pettittet. Either way, two of the aforementioned pitchers would really upgrade the rotation, but it will certainly cost quite a bit. In fact, if the Yankees sign Sabathia and Burnett, will there be any money left for Mark Teixeira? Probably not. Perhaps convincing either Pettitte or Moose to return one a one-year $10 million contract would be the key. That way, the Yankees would only have to sign one of the three pitchers listed, and they won't be bogged down by the multi-year deals the others will demand.
