Yankee Rumors: Cano, Giambi, Rodriguez, McLouth
According to Buster Olney (as reported by MLB Trade Rumors) the Yankee payroll may be in the $180 million range for 2009. It also seems like Olney does not think Jason Giambi will be back, and he views the Oakland Athletics as a logical destination for the slugger. I don't know if Oakland has the space or money for Giambi, and I think he could sign with Toronto or Seattle as well.
Ken Rosenthal thinks that the Yankees could seriously explore trading Cano, and many teams have expressed interest. Rosenthal says that the Yankees will look for a starting pitcher in return, and MLB Trade Rumors has a list of possible suitors. It's be nice if the Yankees could pry Jake Peavy away from the Padres with a package of Cano, Matsui and a few prospects. That probably won't happen, but it would be nice.
George King of the New York Post cites a rumor that I have not heard yet: the Yanks trading for Pirates outfielder Nate McLouth. Both teams denied knowing anything about a possible McLouth deal, and I would not really put much stock in it. King also says the Yankees could pursue Mike Cameron, but it really seems like speculation. One thing is for sure, Melky Cabrera won't be the opening day starter in center field come 2009.
Pete Caldera of the Bergan Record does not think Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu and Damaso Marte will be back next season. Personally, I think Marte and Pettitte have the best chance of returning.

If Pettitte AND Mussina don't come back I'll eat my hat. They both want to pitch across the street and Moose wants 300. The only way either won't return will be because the Yanks tell them to stay away. The only way the Yanks do that is if there's too many better starters already on board. Here's hoping they're not needed.
Marte is OK but Fuentes might be better. Fuentes may want to close.
Cano isn't going anywhere. SD won't trade Peavy but they're likely mildly interested in Matsui. Maybe they think he can play 1B because he can't play everyday in the OF anymore.
