Yankees acquire Swisher, Texeira

via Jerry Crasnick of ESPN:

The New York Yankees have acquired center fielder-first baseman Nick Swisher in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, baseball sources tell ESPN.com.

Minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez is headed to Chicago in the deal, the source said. It's uncertain if any other players are involved.

If Marquez is the only player involved in the deal, this is a masterful trade by Brian Cashman. Swisher can play first base or any outfield position, has a great eye and hits for power. Some might say this means the Yankees will not pursue Mark Teixeira, but Swisher is a decent center fielder (played 70 games there in 2007) and gives the Yankees even more flexibility. Odds are he stays at first and the Yankees go all out for CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett

I was never really impressed with Jeff Marquez, and while his breaking stuff did look god in Scranton occasionally last season, he is no more than a future bottom of the rotation starter.

Update 3:57 pm: Sorry about the headline, thought I would have some fun. To make the deal even sweeter, Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees also acquired Doulbe-A pitcher Kanekoa Texeira in the deal. Texeira went 6-3 with a 1.33 ERA and 2.8 K/BB ration in 61 combined innings for Single-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham.

Update 4:11 pm: Ken Rosenthal is now reporting that the Yankees will also give up infielder Wilson Betemit and minor league pitcher Jhonny Nunez, who was acquired from the Nationals for shortstop Alberto Gonzalez last season. Still a good deal for the Yankees, who will now need to strengthen their bench.

i love this deal for the yankees, its a low risk/high reward move. but i thin swish will be the 1b in 2009.

its nice to see the yankees making a deal so early in the off seson

swisher gives them some serious flexibility but they should stick him in cf and go hard for teixeira

imagine an offense of

damon
jeter
teixeira
arod
matsui
posada
cano
nady
swisher

I like this deal, but it seems like Swisher will be the first baseman going forward. I'll comment on that a bit more later on.

LOL! Yea, Texeira is the closest we're getting to any Teixeira.
